ayside
opened the CDI Premier League season by crossing the Georgia
Straight and playing the students at UVIC. UVIC had the
luxury of already playing a game last week a Friday night
win versus Velox. Bayside for there part have had a rough
lead up to there first game, with mother nature really
making outdoor practice time hard to come by, the snow and
the cold closing the fields for practice and sending the
sharks in to warmer climates and on the hardwood of the
gym.
Surprisingly it was
Bayside that came out firing right off the opening whistle,
not the usual for teams coming off the ferry, but they
seemed to have their legs. Off the opening kickoff bayside
quickly attacked, the ball was moved to #8 Jon Thiel who
beat a couple of defenders, passed off to the ever present
flanker Adam Van Stavern, who made some good ground, then
into the hands of flyhalf Brendan Singbeil who made a nice
pass to release center Ali Shebani who stepped the final
defender and sprinted in to score just 3 minutes into the
game, the conversion was missed by Geoff McIntyre, 5-0 for
Bayside.
In the 6th
minute, Bayside had a chance to extend their lead with a
penalty in front of the posts, but it was unfortunately
pushed wide.
In the 9th
minute, the Vikes responded with a penalty, 5-3 for
Bayside.
Six minutes later Bayside
added to their lead, first a kick down field by UVIC found
the hands of Bayside speedy Fijian winger Isimeli Sigarua
who took the kick inside his own half and decided to have a
go at the defense, gliding past numerous defenders he then
moved the ball into the hands of Center Tony Lecarte who
used his speed and step and took the ball within 5 meters of
the UVIC goal line, before a desperate tackle by a UVIC
defender held him out, but Bayside had support and numbers,
and the ball was worked to the back of the ruck, into big
hands of Van Stavern who powered his way across the line for
Bayside’s second score of the day, the conversion was again
missed, 10-3 for Bayside.
In the 30th
minute is when things started going wrong for Bayside, there
attention was taken of playing rugby and had switched to
questioning every call from the often blown whistle of
referee Sam Langridge. Bayside complaining at every
whistle, then Jon Thiel was shown yellow card, so now
Bayside would be playing short a man.
Two minutes later UVIC
narrowed Bayside’s the score with a penalty, 10-6 for
Bayside.
In the 35th
minute, UVIC used the man advantage, and crossed the line
for their first try of the day, which they converted for
their first lead of the day, 13-10 for UVIC.
Bayside were already down
a man when Adam Van Stavern was yellow carded in the 36th
minute and sent to join Thiel in the Sin Bin, and now
leaving Bayside to play with only 13 men.
It didn’t take long for
UVIC to enjoy the extra space that playing a team, two men
down allows, they crossed the line after only a minute of
Van Stavern being in the bin. UVIC missed the conversion,
18-10 for UVIC.
Halftime score 18-10 for
UVIC.
Bayside started the second
half down only one man as Thiel’s yellow card was now up,
but they still had 4 minutes playing down a man. But they
defended well and stopped the bleeding.
Once Bayside came back to
full strength they went on the attack, camping out inside
the UVIC half. After bayside had driven in a lineout and
what had looked like a try had been called back, to go to a
penalty for Bayside, strange advantage, but Bayside quickly
tapped and went and Brendan Singbeil powered over the line
with 2 men on his back just 10 minutes after the halftime
whistle, the conversion was again missed, 18-15 for UVIC.
In the 55th
minute, UVIC again widened the gap with a penalty 21-15 for
UVIC.
In the 61st
minute UVIC finished off the scoring for the day, crossing
the line for another try, which they converted, 28-15 for
UVIC.
Bayside tried to come back
but there legs just weren’t there, showing the lack of
practice time and game time fitness you would expect from
the first game of the season. Bayside lacking a goal kicker
and being thrown off the game by some questionable calls and
indiscipline will have to be looked at by the Bayside
coaching staff.
All credit to the UVIC,
missing 7 players on tour with Canada sevens, they still are
not afraid to through around the ball, and take you on, from
what we saw the students will be the team to beat. Plus
Canadian rugby looks have a great player for the future with
Flyhalf Nathan Hirayama, who dictated every part of that
game, playing a smart game, moving the ball around, and
putting kicks in to keep the Bayside defense always
guessing. And I am sure his development will only improve
under the watchful eye of Vikes coach Doug Tate.
Bayside now must move
forward to take on the newcomers to the Premier league,
Vancouver Rowing Club at Brockton Oval.

Division
Bayside
Sharks 13 at UVIC 22
The second division game
started off poorly for Bayside, poor handling, poor

the conversion was missed, 5-0 for UVIC
After that try it seem to
awaken Bayside, and now they got there legs under them, in
the 30th minute after some good work by Asesela

he was tackled made a great pass to Adam Roberts who scored
under the posts, 7-5 for Bayside.
