CDI Premier Division-Week 2
Bayside Sharks 17 at UBC Old Boy Ravens 19

February 15th, 2010

by Chris Veslemes

The Bayside Sharks headed out to Jericho Beach Park for a matchup with the UBC Old Boy Ravens.  Bayside looking to rebound after a tough loss versus UVIC the week before, looking to shore up their defence that had allowed 53 points to the students.  The Ravens were looking for their first win of the season after opening their 2010 campaign with a loss to James Bay.

Bayside opened the game pressuring the Ravens, after some good work by Bayside they earned a  5 meter scrum, the ball was released from the scrum out to the Shark backs, the ball ending up in center Matt Miles hands, who broke the gain line but couldn’t quite make it across the line, but a quick cycle to the oncoming forwards, and prop Taylor Stogryn, who pushed his way over the line to score between the posts, Eric Sugawara hit the easy conversion, 7-0 for Bayside just 12 minutes in.

20th minute, Ravens opened their scoring with a Penalty through their scrumhalf, Ed Fairhurst, 7-3 for Bayside.

25th minute, Bayside matched the Ravens earlier Penalty, with one of their own through Sugawara, 10-3 for Bayside.

In the 32nd minute, Bayside used their territorial advantage in the first half and turned it into points, off a 22 meter dropout by the Ravens, it landed in the hands Bayside #8 Pat Bickerton, who took the ball up, after he was tackled, the ball was moved out to the backs, center Matt Miles made a nice pass to hooker Levi Hansen who was hanging out in the centers, he found a gap in the defence, and took it toward the Ravens line, then as the last defender for the Ravens came to tackle Hansen, he off loaded to Miles, who sprinted the last 10 meters to score between the posts, Sugawara conversion 17-3 for Bayside.

Halftime score 17-3 for Bayside.  Bayside had all the possession and had the score to show for it at halftime, looking like they were on their way to a win, but the Ravens had something to say about it.

5 minutes into the second half, the Ravens cut into the Sharks lead, with a penalty from Fairhurst, 17-6 for Bayside.

A minute later, a turning point in the game, Bayside Flanker Cass Conkin was shown a yellow card for repeated infringements at the breakdown.

54th minute, after the Ravens pushed deep into the Bayside 22 meter, close to the goal line, and were awarded a 5 meter scrum.  Bayside scrum, down a man, was out muscled across the line by the Raven scrum to score a pushover try, Fairhurst converted, 17-13 for Bayside.

The Ravens continued to be camped in the Bayside end, even after Conkin had returned from his 10 minutes in the sin bin, he could not subside the wave of Raven forwards, as they kept on driving 1 meter at a time, keeping possession of the ball, forcing the Sharks to infringe.

69th minute, after another one of those infringements, the Sharks were penalized within the range of Fairhurst, who cooly slotted another penalty, 17-16 for Bayside.

Bayside now was just holding on barely to their lead by one point now, a lead that was a total of 14 points now was down to one.  Bayside had their chance to get out of their end, a couple times but unfortunately dropped balls, and poor choices kept them hemmed into their end.

With 2 minutes left in the game, the inevitable happened for Bayside, one of the Sharks was judged to have tripped one of the Ravens, after yellow cards were shown to a player from each side after get together of both teams after the trip.  Fairhurst stepped up and slotted the penalty, to give the Ravens a 2 point lead 19-17.

With only two minutes left, Bayside tried to get into the Ravens half, and they did, set themselves up for the Drop goal to win, but the ball was bobbled, and there was not even an attempt.

The full time whistle went, and Bayside had blown a 14 point lead, and the Ravens had a great comeback.  The game truly was a story of 2 halves, the first half was all Bayside Sharks, and second half was all Ravens.  Bayside walks away from that game with a Bonus point, and sit at 0-2 after 2 weeks, time to get going and start getting some wins, next weekend they host Burnaby Lake.
